Debi Smith, PsyD, is a Licensed Psychologist (PSY21711) whose goal is to reduce the divorce rate in Southern California. Her primary approach to helping couples is through Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, which is based on current scientific research and works well for non-Christians and Christians alike.
A skilled clinical supervisor, Dr. Smith offers training opportunities for postdoctoral and doctoral students who are seeking to refine their skills as couples therapists.
Dr. Smith is Director of OC Christian Counseling and teaches in the Undergraduate Psychology Departments at Azusa Pacific University and Biola University. She is an active member of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS), where she served as West Regional Director (2003-2006) and as International Board Member (2005-2007).

Seminar in Therapeutic Techniques
Emphasis on core facilitation skills. Supportive, re-educative, and reconstructive therapies considered. Personal growth activities incorporated. Prerequisite: upper-division standing. This course includes lectures and discussions providing a survey of numerous approaches to counseling and psychotherapy. Empathy skills lab includes exercises that focus on increasing self-awareness and learning basic helping skills.
Psychology of Men
This course provides a brief survey of biblical, sociocultural, and psychological views of traditional men and masculinity. Particular attention is given to Attachment Theory and current research in understanding the impact of normative experiences on men’s intrapersonal and interpersonal development.
Psychology of Personality
This course acquaints students with the various basic elements of personality and their integration. Students explore concepts regarding the basic components of personality and the processes that undergird an individual’s growth and behavior. The course also reviews current and traditional theories of personality.
Human Growth & Development
This study of human development across the life span emphasizes a multidisciplinary perspective, including such areas as psychology, sociology, processes as social interaction, and the tools for applying developmental psychology to life situations.
Personal & Social Adjustment
Students become familiar with the concept of the "fully functioning individual" and some of the ways of attaining and maintaining such a level of functioning. Facilitation of personal growth through self-awareness and interpersonal relationships are the major emphasis of this course. The course is recommended to students who wish to understand more fully their own psychological functioning.
