Me, too! But my first marriage at 18 years old was a hot mess. I didn’t always have the help I needed. Neither of us did.
Three sons and 16 years later, our marriage ended.
After the dust settled, I went to college and grad school, then opened a Clinical Practice so I could help others avoid what happened to us. Now I’m here to help you.
The Journey: Dream, Vision, Roadblocks, Milestones
That dream of loving and being loved is in our DNA. You can feel it. You even have a vision for what it will look like. But sooner or later, you hit the Roadblocks.
A Roadblock is a barrier or barricade on a road. It might be there because of construction, a natural disaster, or someone else’s issue. How you respond to Roadblocks makes all the difference in the world for your marriage.
What you do with the Roadblocks is a matter of personal choice that determines your role in the story.
- You could choose to avoid the Roadblocks.
- You could choose to get angry about the Roadblocks.
- You could appreciate the Roadblocks as signposts pointing to the next Milestones.
Which role do you want to play?
When you choose the first option, you are playing the victim. When you choose the second option, you are playing the villain. When you choose the third option, you are empowered to become the hero and heroine of your own story.
Milestones: Take One Step at a Time
A milestone is an action or event marking a significant change or stage in development. Sounds simple enough. You date, fall in love, get engaged, get married and … live happily ever after, right?
Yes, when you are both on the same page.
- But you’re often not on the same page.
- You might even be in a different book.
- Because men and women are different.
Always have been. Always will be.
That’s meant to be your greatest strength. But we don’t know how to interpret one another’s behavior, much less understand what they are thinking and feeling, and why they are doing what they are doing … instead of something else.
Love never gives up, according to 1 Corinthians 13.
It’s not magic. It’s simple understanding and skill-building.
I don’t know why no one teaches us the whole truth about marriage.
That’s why I don’t give up. Instead, I’m here to teach you what I’ve learned.
